JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- For more than a decade, George Platt has been coming to The Jacksonville Landing to ring in the New Year.
"We all come down here, everybody -- my family, my office staff, we all make it," said Platt, who watches the annual fireworks show aboard his boat.
As the fireworks go off from a barge on the St. Johns River, he's got one of the best seats in town. But it almost didn't happen. For the second year in a row, the Landing's Director of Marketing, Michael Chambliss, says the show wasn't in the city's budget.
It took some scrambling to secure the fireworks funding.
"About six sponsors total came together to make the fireworks possible tonight on the river," Chambliss said.
Chambliss tells Action News the New Year's Eve Fireworks Spectacular costs well over $10,000. But when we asked him if he ever had a moment of real doubt that it would take place he said, "I knew it would. It's Jacksonville. I knew we would have fireworks on New Year's Eve."
After all, it is a River City tradition.
"The fireworks are impressive. I highly recommend them," said Platt.
The fireworks display is scheduled to start at midnight on the dot and last approximately 10 minutes.
