JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The beaches in Jacksonville are a major attraction for tourists and residents alike. But getting there can be a hassle. The mayor of Jacksonville Beach says changes are on the way, to fix the city's parking problems.
Local business manager, Sergie Kutrovski, actually advises his customers against driving to Cafe One Nineteen.
"If it's possible to not drive, then please don't drive because we have very limited parking,” said Kutrovski.
The café is just one of many local businesses protesting the problematic parking at Jax Beach.
Mayor Charlie Latham told Action News he's heard from owners loud and clear – City Hall needs to take action.
"I'd like to see us establish a big overflow parking area with some trolleys or trams,” said Latham.
He also suggested giving residents a serialized window decal that allows locals to park anywhere for free and create more overflow parking areas central to downtown Jax Beach.
Summertime festivals and events typically take over main public parking areas with booths and vendors. Immediate spaces surrounding the Jax Beach pavilion come with a warning for all drivers that your vehicle will be towed.
It's a headache for Kutrovski and a reminder that change is needed.
“Especially with big events going on, that's really common in the summer. We don't get to have every staff member have their own parking,” said Kutrovski.
Mayor Latham has scheduled three public meetings this month to discuss ideas with the community. The first meeting is geared for local business owners. It starts at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall.
