JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. -- The recount is over in the close Jacksonville Beach mayoral race.

Charlie Latham will be the next mayor. After an election night recount, Latham won by 63 votes in defeating Penny Christian.

The final vote tally is 5,707 votes (50.28%) for Latham, and 5,644 votes (49.72%) for Christian.

Supervisor of Elections Jerry Holland says the required recount came to no additional cost to the taxpayer.

"We want the candidates to feel very confident that at the end of the day, the reason one won or one lost was because that was the number of votes the candidate got," said Holland.

Latham told Action News that he will focus on two issues; crime and helping spur small business growth in Jacksonville Beach.

"It's a mandate from the people to follow through with my platform and I intend to do exactly that," said Latham.

Latham will be sworn into office on Monday.
