JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla.-- When the ocean swells and signals a storm... you better watch out.
"If people aren't familiar with the ocean, we highly advise them to stay in knee deep water or less," Lt. Taylor Anderson said.
Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue plans to be out in full force this weekend. Swells from Hurricane Leslie are creating rough conditions and pushing big waves on to the beach.
"As those waves peak onshore, they can sweep them off their feet and get them into trouble quickly," Anderson continued.
Nobody knows that better than Liz Silva. Her 3-and-a-half-year old son Brody loves the water, but has to be monitored closely.
To prove that point, he broke away during our interview.
"Usually, it's right around where the white wash comes up and he stays about right there. Otherwise, if he wants to go further, I'm holding him, my husband's holding him or he has a life vest on."
Surfers we spoke with love this time of year.
"There's going to be good waves probably all week. I mean, the waves are probably predicted to be as big as they are today, if not bigger moving into the weekend."
No matter what you decide to do the next couple of days...do it carefully. Swim or surf with a buddy...so you don't have to get resued.
"We're kind of used to it. We know what to look for, but that doesn't mean it can't still happen," Anderson said.
The moderate to high rip current risk at First Coast beaches runs through at least Thursday.
