JACKSONVILLE Fla. -- They're popping up in mailboxes all down Ponte Vedra Blvd; letters asking you for your help, but the person who they're coming from could be trying to hurt you.
It starts with an introduction--a beaming young couple in love, offering "blessings from God," and promises of "health and wealth," but there's a catch. This supposed couple is asking for your money. They claim they need $25,000 donations to throw a wedding.
"They target whoever is vulnerable and that just means somebody who's alone and usually elderly," said Heather Bayfield, with Life Management advisors.
Bayfield is an elderly care-taker who picked up the six page letter at one of her client's homes on Ponte Vedra Blvd. She's worried some may be taken advantage of.
"It's really nerve wracking to see what people are willing to do out there," she said.
St. Johns County Sheriff's Office spokesperson, Chuck Mulligan tells me letters like these have become popular for scam artists.
"These are all the tricks and the trades of the con artist," said Mulligan.
Action News reached out to the number provided for donations on the letter...but simply got a voice mail. We're still waiting to hear back.
The Sheriff's Office says they're difficult to catch.
"They'll be working out of another state so they cross state lines in order to perpetrate these frauds," said Mulligan.
But Bayfield wants to make sure you're informed and protected.
The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office asks if you see a letter like this pop up in your mailbox to contact them immediately.
