JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Plastic cups, beer bottles, and plastic bags litter the median on Hodges Boulevard. Locals say something needs to be done about it.

"I think they they should get someone to clean it up. I'm just surprised that an area this nice would have that," said Caleb Osborn.

Action News called Jacksonville's public works department to find out why trash has been allowed to pile up. Debby Delgado, a city spokesperson, says this time of year, neighbors have to call in complaints to see action.

Delgado says public works focuses on other projects from December to March, putting litter control on the backburner. So until a call is made, dirty diapers will continue to stink up the roadway.

"I get if you throw a banana peel out there or something. That decomposes out there, but you know, recycle or find a trash can," said Osborne

Jep Larkin frequents the Hodges area often and says we wouldn't need help from the city if people would simply pick up after themselves.

"People need to recycle and they need to put the trash where it belongs, not on the street," said Larkin.

The City of Jacksonville says if the public works department notices a significant amount of trash, crews will stop to get it or place a work order for it.

A city spokesperson told Action News late Monday afternoon the trash issue was reported to the Solid Waste Division on Friday. The mess is scheduled to be cleaned up on Tuesday.

If you have a trash pickup request, you can call 904-630-CITY (2489).
