JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Hearts are heavy for a community mourning the loss of 8-year-old Cherish Perrywinkle. Hundreds of people, most of them complete strangers, gathered to offer their prayers at her growing memorial at Highlands Baptist Church.
"I only made it about a minute or so and started to get a bit upset and went back to the car," said neighbor, Jason Seethaler.
Many neighbors tell Action News it's like they've adopted Cherish as one of their own.
"My heart goes out to the mother. I spoke with her, I hugged her and I prayed for her," said neighbor, Debra Worthen.
Worthen lives feet away from the church and says this tragedy has impacted the entire neighborhood, a neighborhood now missing Cherish, who was taken from them.
"You will be in a better place and you will always be my friend," said local girl, Madison Hulette.
The love and support from the community doesn't stop there. Some neighbors Action News spoke to Monday, say they are planning to reach out to the family to see if they need help with anything.
