ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – More than 200 supporters from across Florida rallied in support to stop the violence in Venezuela Saturday morning at Castillo de San Marcos.
Local Venezuelans tell Action News they want prayer for their native country.
As they sing "Standing for Freedom", local Venezuelans are asking for peace in Venezuela.
That's why William Mora tells me he joined the hundreds of demonstrators in St. Augustine today.
"We need to show our support to them just for them to get peace, liberty and to fight for the observance of their human rights,” said William Mora, a supporter.
Mora says he has family in Venezuela who are suffering, going without food and means of communication.
He says the violence and poverty has gotten bad under the new president following the death of Hugo Chavez.
Another supporter, Angelica Mijares, says it’s so bad that they can't even go back.
“We need the government to hear the people he doesn't have the right to be killing everyone just because they think differently, it's just so bad all the things that are happening right now in our country and can't believe students are being killed,” said Mijares.
They even turned their flags upside down as a symbol of a call for help in their country.
Mora tells us only prayer can help.
"Venezuela needs you, totally needs you."
All the supporters who came today tell Action News they are just hoping the United States will get involved to help Venezuela.
Mora says to show your support, call the White House at 202-456-1414.
