PONTE VEDRA, Fla. -- It's a practice many Americans are guilty of: Sending a text message while behind the wheel.

To discourage that, AT&T is teaming up with local schools for an "It Can Wait" pledge.

"It's easy to start texting and driving. Almost everyone does. You pull up at a red light and see someone doing it all the time," student Ben Costantino said.

Teen after teen sat down to take the simulator challenge. The task: try to send a message without crashing.

"It's dangerous for yourself, but for others as well," Costantino continued.

Starting Oct. 1, the Florida Ban on Texting While Driving Law will go into effect, making it one of the last four states in the country to enact the safety law.
Ponte Vedra High School is already a step ahead. Last year, Mimi Hayley started the "no phone zone club."

'I think as a peer, it does help because they see someone their age and it's not an adult saying 'you shouldn't be texting while driving," she explained.

As for Costantino, he says you don't have to tell him twice to put the phone down.

'It's not necessarily the safest thing to do."

When it was all said and done, the "no phone zone club" picked up 22 new members and more than 100 new pledges.
