ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- The Clay County Sheriff's Office says a woman shot inside an assisted living facility by her husband, has died. 68-year-old Patricia Stanton died today after being taken off life support Friday.
The shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Life Care Center at 2145 Kingsley Avenue in Orange Park. The Clay County husband and wife were the only ones involved in the shooting.
James Stanton, 75, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Neighbors and friends of the couple say by all accounts they were loving and happy. They went to breakfast on Sundays at a local restaurant. "I'm gonna miss Mr. Jim. I can't understand it," said neighbor Brandon. "He took care of her," said another friend.
Friends say Patricia Stanton was in the facility after a fall on her porch a few weeks ago. The couple does have children and grandchildren.
No other people are involved or in danger at this time and the scene has been secured. There was no evacuation and no one else were injured or threatened.
Action News talked with the facility. A spokesman says they have a security guard on the property and an emergency plan in place.
