JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Derek Hencee and Jacob Carvey love to play basketball at Sheffield Park. They hate that vandals have made it their playground.

"It just burns me up inside," Carvey said.
Over the past two weeks, vandals have shattered glass in the bathrooms, busted door knobs at the concession stand and burned an entire trailer down to its frame.
"This was a home for the police officer to live in that was going to patrol our park," said Tony Herrera, vice president of Oceanway Sports Association.

Herrera called the destruction disheartening. It's happening at a public park, home of the Pop Warner Buccaneers.
"As taxpayers, we pay our money so the kids can have a place to come, have fun, and not be on the streets. And people that don't care come out here and ruin it for the children," said Herrera.
No one knows who the vandals are, but Herrera said Oceanway Sports, the city and police are taking steps to catch them.
If the vandals are caught, they could be charged with criminal mischief.  They could be slapped with a fine or sent to jail.

This is very sad and concerning. We live across from the park and our playground has been vandalized recently as well. The Sheffield park is very nice addition to our community. Somehow the city will need to lock the park down or get additional patrols in the area. We had talked to the local city representative office saying that new additions to the park was coming but I guess repairs are needed and may deter from the additional improvements.
