ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.-- He's supposed to be looking out for the community's health, but police say he got caught looking into a woman's window.

Dr. John Koppman, a surgeon who practices at U.S. Bariatric at Flagler Hospital, is accused of "peeping" on a young woman at his neighbor's house at Sea Colony.
The 23-year-old victim tells Action News that Koppman was staring at her through a window while she was changing clothes. She told police when Dr. Koppman made eye contact with her, he ran through the bushes. Police caught him down the street shortly afterward.

His colleagues at Flagler Hospital can't believe it. Dr. Robert Marema has had Koppman on his bariatric surgery staff for more than six years. Marema said he never had any concerns with the way Koppman interacts with patients.

"He has an excellent patient-and-physician relationship. He's been a hard worker all the time," said Marema.  "I have received no complaints in the past."

Action News has learned that Koppman has been placed on a leave of absence while the investigation continues.

"We have had an excellent six-plus years of working together and I sincerely hope that everything is found to be not true, but we do have to work through this and see what happens from here," Marema said.

Action News did some digging and found no other blemishes on Koppman's record. He has no previous arrests and no history of medical complaints.

SusanC writes First of all I know Dr Koppman He is not tall enough to remove motion lights from a house second if a 23 yr old woman is getting undressed in front of a open window in a lighted room she wants to get looked at and when she does she starts screaming peeping tom Pullleease get a grip and really pay attention to the story. She wanted the attention. Dr Koppman is my bariatric surgeon and he also operated on me for colon cancer of which I am happy to say was successful without chemo therapy. He is a amazing and caring surgeon one of the very best at his craft. He is a loving husband and great father. He is starting his own practice and some good will come out of this whether all the nay sayers like it or not. Remember when one door closes somethings another one opens Good Luck Dr K Hope to see you soon in your new office

My question is what was she doing stripping in front of an open window and not behind pulled shades like normal people do? Was he just out for a walk and happened by and looked up as he passed by and saw her undressing through the unblocked window? Was he sneeking in the bushes and peeping under the shade or what? That has happened to me once a long time ago. Out for a liesure walk and by chance walked by an open window where someone was undressing, looked and saw what I wouldn't have seen had the curtains been pulled, kept walking and that was the end of that. Maybe he should have stayed home that day. I'll wait and see what comes from the investegation before I draw any conclusions.

Dr. Koppman performed my surgery last year and was as professional and caring as you would hope a surgeon would be. He was actually far more professional and did an excellent job of listening and explaining things than all other doctors I'd been to. I'm saddened that this has happened and I truly hope it was a case of mistaken identity. If not, I hope he receives help because it would be devastating to lose this excellent surgeon. Up until this accusation he has been a true asset to St. Johns County.
