JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WOKV) -- Now that veterans' disability and pension checks are at risk for November, veterans here on the First Coast are closely watching Washington for any hints of a deal that would end the government shutdown.

"I've been overseas," said veteran David Lloyd. "There's more compromise in England, Japan and Okinawa than there is in America."

Lloyd says after 30 years in the Navy he retired as a Master Chief. And his retirement checks cover his rent, electric, food and bills.

"I can deal with three months before everything will break lose," Lloyd says. "The damn will come lose."

He says he can't believe this shutdown could put his benefits at risk.

"I've never seen anything like this in my entire life," he said.

If he runs out of savings, Lloyd said he'll tell the credit card companies, "You have a problem, you're not paid? Call Washington, D.C."

Mike from Palatka said he relies heavily on his retired and disability benefits from the V.A.

"And I'm just barely making ends meet as it is," he said.

If he were to lose his check next month, he said it would wipe him out, and he'd lose the place he's living in.

Disabled veteran David Gordy said veterans have earned their benefits.
"You know we don't sit around collecting welfare and food stamps," he said.

He said he hopes Congress remembers who voted them in, "and who can take them out of those chairs."

WOKV also spoke with Dale, who said he started serving in the Navy in 1977 and has gotten in the habit of building a savings.

"I lived through all those shutdowns and I was smart enough to always start saving up this time of year because they always threaten not to pay us."
