JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Shaketa Sharell Jones has been convicted of murder for a second time. Her first conviction came in January of 2011, but was reversed by Florida's First District Court of Appeal because of a jury selection error.
In May 2010, Jones and her then boyfriend Jessie Cooper held up a Gate gas station on Atlantic Boulevard. Jones was the lookout for Cooper, who robbed a clerk at gunpoint and took $13,000.
The couple did not know that JSO undercover officers were working nearby and saw the robbery take place. Those officers pulled the couple over. That's when Cooper took out a gun and flashed it at officers. JSO officers warned him to put the gun away, but he did not comply and officers shot and killed Cooper on the scene. Jones was convicted in Cooper’s death because it occurred while she committed a felony.
“This case is a great example of criminals being held accountable for the deaths that occur as a result of the crimes they commit. It is unfortunate that the Defendant and Mr. Cooper left the detectives with no other choice but to use deadly force. Due to the quick response of JSO, no officers or innocent civilians were injured,” said Assistant State Attorney John Guy. ASA Joe Sonson also tried the case.
Jones faces a maximum of life in prison on each charge. She will be sentenced December 18, 2012.
