ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla -- Police have arrested a man believed to be the only suspect from a 2007 cold case murder in Guana State Park.

Early Wednesday morning St. Johns County Sheriff's Office detectives arrested Phillip Carl Pomper, 34, for the 2007 unsolved murder of Clark Edwin McWhorter.

On January 28, 2007, McWhorter's body was found in the roadway on Coastal Highway in Guana State Park.

According to the autopsy, McWhorter died from a single gunshot wound.

After receiving tips from witnesses, detectives were able to connect Pomper to the incident.

With the assistance of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and the United States Marshals Service, the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office was able to locate Pomper.

According to detectives, Pomper admitted to being involved in McWhorter's death and told investigators he did not know him.  Detectives believe the murder was completely random.

The State Attorney's Office obtained a warrant for Pomper for First Degree Murder.  He is currently being held in the Duval County Jail.
