Man arrested for fatally injuring a child

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A local man has been charged with murder after the child he is accused of hitting died from her injuries.

Devonte Rashad Baker was arrested on December 15 after a 2-year-old child he was caring for was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital with critical brain injuries.

Baker originally told police the child had fallen in the shower. He later told police he shoved the child to the ground because she was crying.

On Tuesday, December 18, Brooklyn Sanchez died from her injuries. A few days later, the Medical Examiner's Office revealed the cause of death was a blunt force trauma to the head.

Wednesday morning, Baker was charged with murder in the death of Brooklyn Sanchez. He is currently in jail on his initial charges of Aggravated Battery to a Minor.

Baker is due in court on January 8 and the investigation is ongoing.
