ORANGE PARK Fla-- Island View Baptist Church wants to know why their place of vigil become a place for vandals just before 4:00 AM Sunday. Religious text was found charred and glass was shattered everywhere inside one of the church buildings.
"Chairs were set on fire, chairs were thrown through windows, picture frames busted," said Pastor Kelvin Collison of the destruction.
The Pastor told Action News that a drunken man lashed out at his church's Sunday School.
"This was a gentleman who was intoxicated and upset and happned to walk into our church and throw a temper tantrum," he said. "It's unfortunate it got so out of control and caused so much damage."
The damage is estimated at $35,000. Ironically 21 years ago this month, the church's sanctuary also caught fire and burned down.
"For some of those church members to arrive to smell smoke it brought back a lot of memories and not good ones," said Pastor Collison.
Services ran as usual Sunday morning. The church says they're practicing what any good Christian should; forgiveness.
