NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. -- A man from Jacksonville is accused of exploiting the elderly while pretending to be a Dish Network subcontractor.
Anthony William Gerhold, 41, faces seven counts of schemes to defraud and exploitation of an elderly person.
The Nassau County Sheriff's Office says Gerhold targeted Dish Network customers and tried to convince them to upgrade their services, including any repairs, for a $900 fee.
Gerhold, according to investigators, told the victims their satellite service would be free for the next three months if they signed a contract with him.
Customers started getting late payment bills and cancelation notices for nonpayment. Dish told them they signed a fraudulent contract and the company never received any payment for satellite service or repair.
"There have been at least seven known individuals victimized so far in Nassau County, but the suspect stated there may be as many as 45," said Sheriff Bill Leeper.
Anyone who believes they may be a victim is being asked to call the Nassau County Sheriff's Office at 904-225-5174.
Gerhold has similar arrests in Alachua and Columbia counties.
