ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla.-- Police say a man who started a standoff near Mayport Road and Pioneer Street was found dead.

Police placed two nearby schools on lockdown on the first day of classes and evacuated nearby homes for more than five hours.

Police say a man beat his wife sending her to the hospital then barricaded himself in his home, later firing shots.

Neighbors say they've seen police at the home before.

"I have seen patrol cars stop at their house a few times," said neighbor, Lester Willis.

Kenneth Williams lives across from the couple. He told Action News he's seen the suspect's wife hurt before.

"She was sitting on the neighbor's porch across the street hanging out with her and she had a black eye where he beat her or something one time before," he said.

Williams said the couple had recently reconciled.

"I saw her at the store the other night and she was asking me some questions and said she'd give him another chance," he said.

People who know the couple say a fight over finances is what sent the husband out of control.

They say the wife was treated at the hospital and is recovering from non life-threatening injuries.
