LAKE CITY, Fla. -- A statewide shooting rampage is over. After a three-hour standoff with police Tuesday night, investigators said the suspect killed himself inside a Lake City motel. Witnesses said it was chaos.

"All of the cop cars had the whole entire row of Highway 90, all the way from one entrance to the next, completely blocked off," said Valerie Winters.

The manhunt for murder suspect Pedro Maldonado started hours before when Columbia County sheriff's deputies were put on alert for a man armed with a crossbow. Investigators said he used that weapon to kill his wife and youngest son near their Miami home, then traveled to Tallahassee to try and kill his other son, a Florida State University student.

Police said Maldonado attacked him, tried to shoot him but missed and then took off.

"We patrolled the different area motels and stuff like that and one of our employees located the vehicle on 90 West," said Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter.

The sheriff said they didn't know what to expect and went to great lengths to ensure everyone's safety, starting with an immediate evacuation of the motel. After many failed attempts to make contact with Maldonado, the SWAT team went in and found him dead.

Action News wanted to know if he took his own life during the standoff.

"I don't know at this time, and the medical examiner's office will be able to determine the time of death," said Hunter.

Investigators said Maldonado called a friend Tuesday and admitted to killing his wife and son.
