HASTINGS, Fla. -- Quick thinking helped save a man’s life as flames quickly spread inside the house in which he was living.
The flames broke out just after midnight Monday. Stanley Boatwright told Action News he was sleeping at the time.
“I didn’t realize it was on fire until the whole roof was on fire. My cousin (was) standing there screaming and telling me,” he said.
The two men quickly realized their upstairs neighbor was still home.
“He hung out the window, we caught him and he fell and hurt his leg," Boatwright said. “They say he breathed in a lot of smoke.”
The man was transported to a local hospital, and was later released. He declined to comment to Action News.
Smoke rose from the house for hours after the fire, a sign of the intensity of the flames.
The fire marshal is still investigating the cause. The Red Cross has offered assistance to the men who lived in the home. It appears that nothing is salvageable.
