FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. -- A Flagler County Deputy is out of surgery after being involved in a crash that killed a man from Palm Coast.

The crash happened at the corner of State Road 100 and West Black Point Road.

The Florida Highway Patrol says Deputy Christopher Crego was responding to an emergency call.  He had his lights flashing and sirens on when he rear-ended a van.

The van flipped and rolled to the side of the road, killing the driver, identified as 64-year-old Eduardo Luis Pacheco.

Sgt. Dylan Bryan with FHP says it appears Pacheco was slowing down to yield to the deputy's vehicle.

There was a school bus in the area that was hit by debris. There were three people on board, but no one was injured.

Pacheco was killed in the crash. Deputy Crego was transported to Halifax Hospital with serious injuries.

FHP says Crego hit the windshield, so troopers are investigating whether he was wearing a seatbelt.

Charges are pending.

Crego is expected to recover from his injuries.  He is a husband and father of a 6-year-old boy.  He's been with the Flagler County Sheriff's Office for about 18 months.

This officer was not using "due diligence" when this accident occurred. Lights & sirens do not cancel out his responsibility to avoid other vehicles. Sad day for all involved.
