ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- The St. Augustine Police Department is investigating a shooting that left one man dead Sunday afternoon.
St. Augustine Police Department spokesman Mark Samson says police were called to the Main Library at 1960 N. Ponce De Leon Blvd. at 1:45 p.m. in response to a disturbance. When they got there police learned an unidentified man got into an argument with a woman before driving erratically in the library parking lot. The man left the scene before police arrived.
Investigators say that subject jumped into a truck near Cunningham Avenue. The driver chose to return the vehicle, containing a woman and two kids, back to the residence they left to get help to remove the suspect.
According to Samson, when the truck stopped, the suspect tried to get into the vehicle. The truck driver's father attempted to help remove the suspect, but the suspect attacked him. The driver asked the man to stop. The suspect did not comply and the the driver opened fire, killing him.
Police say it is too early to tell if he will be facing charges, but at this point the shooting appears to be in self-defense.
Police have not released the identity of the shooter or the man killed.
