JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man pleaded guilty this week to attempting to kill his mother and stepfather.

Jerimy Smith, 40, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder in the first degree, grand theft auto and petit theft. He was scheduled to go to trial on the charges this week.

According to a release, Smith went into his parents' bedroom in February 2012, while they were sleeping, and began beating them repeatedly with a metal baseball bat.

After beating his mother and his stepfather, Smith took his mother's car and crashed it about five miles from their home. Jacksonville Fire and Rescue responded to the crash and began to treat Smith, but Smith fled before police arrived on the scene. Smith turned himself into police the next day.

Smith is a habitual offender. He will be sentenced to mandatory life in prison the week of February 25.
