Man shot when rifle falls to floor
LAKE CITY, Fla. -- The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is investigating an accidental shooting.
Deputies say a homeowner in Lulu had a .22 caliber rifle next to the front door. She uses it to defend her chickens from a fox, according to investigators.
She told investigators her 30-year-old son, Brian Wayne Ward, picked up the rifle to move it. The rifle fell to the floor and discharged. The bullet struck him in the chest. He's being treated at UF Health in Gainesville.
