JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The best friend of a Chicago Bears superfan slashed to death at a pub at The Jacksonville Landing is speaking out.

Nick Viverito has been a friend of Christopher Pettry since childhood. He was his best man at his wedding, and the godfather to his first-born child.

Viverito is the one who encouraged Pettry to come to Jacksonville to watch their beloved Bears take on the Jacksonville Jaguars.

But Pettry never made it to the game. Police say Matthew Hinson slashed Pettry's throat in an altercation at Fionn McCools.

Viverito says the pub was crowded and Pettry offered Hinson's female guest a chair, since there was space at their table. Viverito thinks that's what set Hinson off.

Now, Viverito is doing all he can to help Pettry's family.

The Chicago Bears are stepping forward as well. Some players are hosting a fundraiser for Pettry's family this weekend.

A man from Jacksonville has also set up a website where people can donate.
