JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office recovered remains of a man Tuesday in a wooded area behind the 9100 block of 103rd Street.

Sgt. Lonnie Mills of the JSO Homicide Division said, "The body appears to be a black male possibly in his 40s."

The body was found by a missing persons investigator. Officers say they were led to the remains in the woods by the smell of a decomposing corpse.

Despite the tip that led them to the rural area near a Westside mobile home park, police say they couldn't confirm if it's indeed the missing person they were trying to locate.

Mills said, "He's in a state of decomposition. So it's difficult to determine his identity and his age."

Investigators are trying to ascertain the cause if death.
