Mayor Brown addresses Tropical Storm Beryl concerns

UPDATE # 10 – 9 a.m.
TROPICAL STORM BERYL
 
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., May 28, 2012
  • Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) has dispatched 15 tree crews, 30 electrical crews and 20 water crews to address utilities issues.
  • Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) has suspended ALL bus service for the remainder of Monday, May 28, 2012. They will resume regular bus service on Tuesday morning, May 29.
  • Wonderwood Expressway Bridge has reopened.
  • Mathews Bridge remains closed.
  • JEA reports outages for approximately 20,000 customers. Citizens are reminded to call 9-1-1 if they see sparking wires. They should call 665-6000 to report an outage.
  • Monday morning garbage collection is canceled.  Collection normally scheduled for today has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 2.
  • For those residents that depend on electricity for medical devices; a shelter remains open at the Legends Center at Soutel and Moncrief in Northwest Jacksonville.  To arrange transportation to the shelter, call 630-CITY.
  • Citizens are asked to report ALL storm related damage to 904-630-CITY (2489) – blocked roads; damage to buildings; downed trees; flooding.
  • Citizens are asked to report ALL power outages to JEA, the local power utility, at 904-665-6000 – crews worked overnight, and additional crews are coming online this morning

OVERNIGHT STATS
  • No storm-related injuries/fatalities have been reported
  • Reports of flooding are being verified. Expect sporadic road closures.
  • Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Dept. is working more than 350 calls to address downed trees blocking roads, in addition to their work proactively identifying these hazards.
  • More than 1,000 city personnel have been working this storm including: first responders; public works; JEA. We would also like to recognize the Red Cross volunteers and forward observers, who continue to provide invaluable assistance to this emergency response.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Mayor Alvin Brown, along with JFRD and other emergency agencies, continue to ask residents for their cooperation as the city weathered Tropical Storm Beryl.

Brown said in a morning news conference that the city is still on high alert while emergency teams assess the damage, clear debris and work to restore power to more than 20,000 homes and businesses.

The mayor says the Wonderwood and Mathews bridges will remain closed until further notice.

He also said that after the storm that his military affairs staff will meet with the families of our fallen to reschedule to todays memorial ceremony which was canceled.
