JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Mayor Alvin Brown held a special ceremony in honor of Jacksonville Beach surfer, Cody Thompson.

Thompson won the 2013 Rip Curl Pro Surfing Contest. He's the first person from Northeast Florida to win a 4-star event.

“Cody Thompson showed us all a great example of performance under pressure. More than sports, we must think about the game of life and the lessons we learn about adapting to challenges and never giving up,” said Mayor Brown. “It’s an honor to welcome him back to our community with this new championship symbolizing years of his hard work.”

Thompson is widely considered to be one of the best surfers in the entire state.
