JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Two men were cited with created a public health hazard after more than 4,300 tires were found in their yard.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission cited Curt Hatton and Richard Evans for maintaining a waste tire site in excess of 1,500 tires without the proper permit. They were also cited with creating a public health hazard. The two were operating their business of reselling and disposing of used tires from a home in Arlington. We caught up with a man going inside. He says he wasn't the one cited, but didn't say much else.
There are two major concerns. Fires could start. FWC found a burn barrel in the middle of all the tires.
Also, all these tires are a breeding ground for mosquitoes because of the standing water. "It's not something we want to have in the area. We want the tires out as fast as we can get them out. We've all been around areas with a lot of mosquitoes and it's not pleasant," said Karen Parker of FWC.
FWC tells Action News the agency will be inspecting the home in the future to ensure the tires were removed and properly disposed of. The two men are facing fines of up to $500 or up to 50 days in jail.
