No closure for Haleigh Cummings family after remains ID'd as Jacksonville missing man
SATSUMA, Fla. -- She disappeared from her bed in the middle of the night. That's the story the last person to ever see Haleigh Cummings alive claims.
Feb. 10, 2009, the little girl disappeared. It's been nearly five long, painful years for Haleigh Cummings family.
"Every day it's something, no matter what you do, it's always in the back of your mind," said great grandmother Annette Sykes.
Sykes has never given up hope her great granddaughter is still alive. Haleigh would be ten today. And Sykes can't help but study every young girl she passes.
"Always look at little blonde-headed girls. You always look. You can't help it," she said.
Tuesday, news broke skeletal remains had been located in the same small town Haleigh called home.
"I didn't think it was her. I really didn't," Sykes said.
The great grandmother's instinct was right. The remains have been identified as a missing man from Jacksonville.
Sykes wonders if she will live to see closure like that for her own case. She has lung cancer and isn't undergoing chemotherapy. Her days are numbered.
"It's really hard. I thought about that a lot. It just makes me pray harder and ask God to bring her back before I go so I could see her one more time," she said.
While Sykes is confident Haleigh is still walking this Earth, she does have some comfort knowing if she isn't, then Haleigh is up there waiting for her for a reunion.
"Heaven on Earth if it's here. And heaven heaven if it's there. It would just be indescribable," she said.
The Putnam County Sheriff's office says the investigation is still very much alive. But Sykes said the family feels abandoned.
The case has not officially been ruled a homicide. But the sheriff's office does not believe Haleigh is still alive.
