BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) -- A Georgia woman charged in connection with the March slaying of a baby in Brunswick says she wants to be tried separately from her son, who is charged with shooting the child during a robbery attempt.

The Brunswick News reports that Karimah Elkins' attorney has filed a court motion arguing jurors would have trouble distinguishing between five different defendants charged in the case.

[Special coverage: Brunswick Baby Murder]

Police say Elkins and another family member tried to get rid of the gun that her son, 18-year-old De'Marquise Elkins, used to shoot 13-month-old Antonio Santiago in the face. Police say the boy was shot after the teenager and an accomplice tried to rob the child's mother.

A judge has moved De'Marquise Elkins' trial to Marietta, just northwest of Atlanta. It's scheduled to start Aug. 19.

She should get a separate trial. While she committed a crime and needs punishing what mother would not try to save their son, even if they had done a terrible thing? An example need to be made that you cannot be an accomplice to murder. She did not pull the trigger or coax her son to kill someone. Separate trial is in order.

Of course it wants its own trial. It isn't paying for any of it. Unfortunately they have all the rights afforded them due to those that have fought to give it to them.
