JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Naval Air Station Jacksonville will make history on Friday when the P-8A Poseidon is deployed for the first time. The squadron will head to the Western Pacific.
The Poseidon performs long-range anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. The Poseidon replaces the Orion aircraft.
The U.S. Navy says NAS Jacksonville Patrol Squadron Sixteen (VP-16
) completed the transition to the P-8A in January 2013. Squadron members have spent the last year preparing for their upcoming deployment as the first squadron to take the P-8 into active duty.
Family members and friends of the "War Eagles" will be at the hangar to bid farewell to their loved ones during a ceremony on Friday.
