FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. -- With near record-breaking weather headed our direction, folks in Nassau County are working to keep dozens of little lives safe from the cold.

A facelift is under way for the Nassau Humane Society. The mostly outdoor facility is in bad shape. The cattery has no heat. The building remodel is still in the infant stages, and Monday night, as temperatures are expected to dip well below freezing, leaders there are scrambling.

"Fosters have been helping us out so we've been able to make sure all the dogs we have on site are in our indoor kennels but it's been really hard. It's taken a lot of extra work," said Brandy Bateman Carvalho, the shelter's executive director.

The dogs now have a makeshift quarters for the night. Usually, most of them are kept in the outdoor kennels. Carvalho said she knew their lives would be in jeopardy out there for the night so they improvised, but the shelter doesn't have room for any more.

"If anybody needs help, we can't do it. We don't want any dogs suffering in this cold weather and we're maxed out on our indoor space," she said.

She said if you own an outdoor pet, it's critical to bring them inside overnight and to set out extra protection for any neighborhood strays.

"Put out blankets, give them some sort of comfort. Getting them off the ground is probably one of the key things, making sure they don't have to lay on the cold dirt or cement," she said.

The new facility is expected to be complete by next summer.
