NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. -- The neighborhood of North Hampton is usually quiet, but recently they've been shaken. Hank Hurst lives in North Hampton and he tells Action News that neighbors are talking about a rash of burglaries and items missing from garages.

Neighbors called police Monday morning about a suspicious man attempting to break into cars and homes. When a deputy approached him, Sheriff Bill Leeper says the suspect got violent.

"He attacked the deputy. The deputy attempted to tase him. For some reason that didn't work so he tagged him again and he shot him," said Leeper.

The suspect, whose name is not being released, died at the scene from at least one gunshot wound to the chest. The unnamed officer was taken to Nassau Baptist to be treated for minor injuries. Neighbors were left stunned.

"It's unreal! I couldn't imagine if my daughter or son were out there. Say my daughter was shooting hoops on her day off...What could happen with stray bullets? So I'm kind of interested to know why they're popping off so many bullets in the middle of a neighborhood," said Hurst.

Officials aren't sure if the suspect had a gun, and Leeper says the FDLE is taking over the case.

"We want an independent agency to investigate this since were involved just to make sure everything is done correctly," said Leeper.

Action News learned the officer involved will most likely be suspended with pay during the investigation as part of the department's normal procedure. The deputy who was injured has been on the force for several years and is expected to make a full recovery.
