NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. -- The Nassau County Sheriff's Department is pushing for a new police headquarters.

The board of county commissioners voted tonight to put construction of a new sheriff's administration building into the capital improvement plan.

Sheriff Bill Leeper tells Action News he wants to downsize the current plan from 50,000 square feet to 35,000 square feet.

Leeper also said he wants to keep the cost of the new facility under $10 million.

The next step is to develop plans and get bids.

The current facility was originally built in 1974 as a jail and has ongoing issues that include leaks and mold, according to Leeper.
