ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A local National Guard member was remembered fondly during a memorial service at the St. Francis Barracks in St. Augustine.

Captain Tecarie Czarnecki was on her way to a training exercise in Tallahassee with Sergeant David Stone when both were hit by a car and killed on September 8. They had stopped along I-10 to help a stranded driver when someone passing by hit them. Czarnecki lives in St. Augustine and serves at Camp Blanding.

Czarnecki was in the Florida Army National Guard for 20 years and served on the 44th Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Suport Team. She was posthumously awarded the Florida Cross and the Meritorious Service Medal.

In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
