ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Investigators say a man killed during a confrontation with deputies died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
But authorities cannot say with certainty, until forensic evidence comes back, whether that gunshot came from a deputy's firearm.
Deputies responded to a home on Katnack Road Wednesday afternoon, following a 911 call about someone threatening family members.
Investigators say Rodney Stevens
came out of the home and threatened to arm himself with a weapon after spotting deputies.
The deputies went into the home and confronted Stevens in a back bedroom, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.
A shot was fired and Stevens was found dead. Authorities recovered a loaded shotgun on the bed.
Deputy Thomas Coward, 29, is on paid administrative leave. The move is standard procedure in cases where lethal force is used.
