JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Humane Society is encouraging older people to give pets a much-needed new home.
The JHS is waiving adoption fees for those 55 years and older. The program is sponsored Purina, the maker of pet food and other products.
"Pet ownership helps people feel healthier, happier and more engaged with the community," said Denise Deisler, JHS executive director. "Even more importantly, pets encourage people to exercise and interact with others socially. We hope this new program will benefit people and pets, bringing joy to adopters and loving new homes to animals."
The sponsorship also covers the cost of spaying/neutering, heartworm testing, microchipping and several other initial costs. Duval County residents are responsible for a $20 rabies tag at the time of the adoption.
