JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- New safety features have been added to a San Jose crosswalk after a driver struck and killed a Jacksonville mother last month.

Mike Goldman, with the Florida Department of Transportation, said new sensors are now posted high at the busy intersection of San Jose and Haley Road. Goldman told Action News the sensors could be lifesavers.

"What the intent, is to avoid the situation of somebody having to press a button to cross the street," said Goldman.

Goldman said crews have been busy improving the crosswalk.

Crews have painted new lines to make it more visible and added sensors that automatically detect when a pedestrian is standing by. The improvements come after a local mother, Esther Ohayon, died crossing the street last month.

"We put in a pedestrian countdown clocks there, we upgraded the intersection," said Goldman.

Action News contacted the rabbi from the Jewish community center where Ohayon attended, but Rabbi Yaakov Fisch said he's not ready to comment on the changes just yet.

In the days after the tragic death, that rabbi had more to say to Action News.

"Its excruciating and painful to think that it takes a death of a wonderful person for us to act," said Fisch.

So far, two of the motion detectors have been installed for now, which cost around $2,000 a piece.

Goldman said this is a small fix but it will have a major impact if the pilot plan is successful.
Goldman added if the plan works, the transportation department plans to add six more sensors to the intersection.

Synagogue leaders have a meeting with FDOT on Monday to discuss the changes.
