JACKSONVILLE, Fla -- Newt Gingrich made a stop in the River City Thursday stumping for his former rival. He stopped at the republican headquarters on the Southside to talk about why Mitt Romney is the better choice for President.
Action News was the only station in town to ask Gingrich any questions during his stop. One of the questions asked was if Gingrich's vision is the same as Mitt Romney's. He told Action News it is much closer to his than Obama's. And that's why he says he had no problem throwing his support behind Romney.
"He has a day-one plan that I like," Gingrich told the crowd Thursday. Today, Newt Gingrich is Mitt Romney's biggest fan. But it wasn't always that way. Flash back a few months. The two men fought tooth and nail -- sometimes their debates got downright dirty.
"You've spent so much of this campaign trying to separate yourself from Mitt Romney. How challenging will it be to get your supporters on his team?" questioned Action News' Kristen Sell to Gingrich Thursday.
"Oh I think if the comparison is with Obama then its very easy. I think Obama has been such a disaster on the economy and on jobs," Gingrich told Action News.
Joyce Stokes is on team Gingrich. But now, she's wearing a Romney sticker.
"As soon as Newt dropped out it wasn't hard because you have to go for the best candidate and I think he's very conservative," she said.
Stokes added she'd still like to see him in the White House at some capacity. Possibly as Vice President.
"I think he'd make a good V.P. or either Secretary of Defense or something like that," she said.
So Action News took the big question straight to Gingrich himself. He says Romney has a short list for V.P. But who is on it? Will Gingrich become his former arch rival's right hand man?
"You never can tell. You'd have to ask Romney." Gingrich said. As for if that's something he'd like to see happen, "I don't know!" he said with a smile and a laugh. "I don't worry about it much I just want to help elect the Governor and help elect a republican senate."
Gingrich says Florida and Jacksonville specifically will play a key role in this election. He says a for a Republican to win Florida, they have to win Duval County by a big majority. And he says no republican is going to win the Presidency without Florida.
