ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Between Memorial Day and Labor Day St. Johns County officials report that there were zero drowning accidents at the beaches.

Between the two holidays St. Johns County provides lifeguard towers in addition to response teams from St. Johns County Fire Rescue.

This summer the response teams responded to 7,200 calls for emergency service on county beaches. There was an average of 71 emergency events daily.

The emergencies varied as follows:
  • 180 calls to help swimmers in distress
  • 156 calls for medical attention
  • 49 calls for missing persons
  • 44 calls for traumatic injury
  • 47 calls for vessel assistance
  • four calls for assistance to extinguish fire in a vessel

St. Johns County officials say the majority of calls were for marine rescue staff to assist more than 6,700 people.

Roughly 18 lifeguard towers cover 42 miles of the St. Johns County coastline during the spring/summer beach season. Approximately 50 seasonal workers along with firefighters are responsible for keeping the beaches safe.

Beaches in St. Johns County are no longer staffed effective Sept. 3, but mobile truck patrols through several beach zones will continue until mid-September.
