JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- One person is dead and two others are critically injured from a house fire in Northwest Jacksonville.
The fire happened at a home along West 17th Street, near Canal Street.
Firefighters arrived at the scene in Northwest Jacksonville and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the home. They were alerted that there were two people inside.
Firefighters tell us that one elderly woman was rescued from a back bedroom. Another elderly woman was found dead toward the front of the house. A third woman, who attempted to help the two victims in the home was injured as well.
Both victims were taken to UF and Shands Hospital with critical injuries.
The American Red Cross was called to assist other displaced victims.
The state fire marshals office and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office homicide unit are investigating the incident.
