PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- One person is dead after a shooting involving a deputy, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.
An Action News crew at the scene reports the shooting happened overnight on Old San Mateo Road just off of US 17. That's right on the San Mateo, East Palatka line in Putnam County..
Investigators with the sheriff's Office told Action News deputies responded to the home after reports of shots fired.
They said they found Timothy Mahoney, 58, armed with a handgun on his back porch.
Investigators say they tried to talk Mahoney down, and when that didn't work they fired at him.
Deputies say Mahoney then opened fire with his handgun and shot deputy Arron Thomas in the arm. Deputies returned fire hitting Mahoney.
Mahoney died on the way to the hospital from gunshot wounds.
Deputy Thomas, a 15 year law enforcement veteran, is in stable condition. He is scheduled for surgery later today.
Thomas has been with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office for the last eight years. He was with the Palatka Police Department before that. A spokesman with the sheriff's office tells Action News Thomas currently serves as a field training officer and is very well respected on the force.
Thomas and the other deputies involved in the shooting are on administrative leave until an investigation into the shooting is complete. That is per Putnam County Sheriff's Office policy.
The FDLE says they are investigating the shooting.
