ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- The town of Orange Park is now officially patrolled by an unaccredited police force.

The department failed to submit all of the required paperwork to the Florida Police Accreditation Coalition Inc. needed by June 8.

Action News talked with one town councilman who said the loss of the accreditation means nothing more than a few accreditation stickers will come off of the patrol cars and that the public will see no change in protection.

The department employs around two dozen personnel and serves some 8,500 homes.

The story says they lost accreditation because they didn't send in the required paperwork. Then to justify their "mistake" they mock the value of the accreditation by saying they'll just have to remove a few stickers. To be clear this is a major deal. Someone there was asleep at the wheel and I heard nothing about accountability or what is being done to rectify this situation, other than the removal of stickers. There is a reason police departments strive to be accredited. It shows that as an organization you meet some level of exacting standards...apparently Orange Park no longer meets the standards. I worry about the leadership message this sends to the folks on the beat. It's okay if you miss a deadline or leave out some paperwork, it's just criminal justice after all. We should expect and demand more from law enforcement and from the city.

"...accreditation means nothing more than a few accreditation stickers will come off of the patrol cars and that the public will see no change in protection." You can bet that the protection will be no worse.
