ORANGE PARK, Fla.-- Seven days ago, tragedy struck the Lawson family like never before.
Teyi Lawson, 23, allegedly killed his mother DeDe Etey after an argument. The incident left neighbors shocked and sister Nadou with a heavy heart.
"Just trying to pick up the pieces. It's tough," she said.
The Lawsons came to Florida in 2000 from the West African country of Togo. There, family is everything, and the phrase "it takes a village to raise a child" is literal.
Because of that, the Lawsons are determined to get Etey's body back there -- for both burial and the chance for loved ones to bid farewell.
"We haven't been back since we've been here, and because of what just took place -- to bring her back so they can see her. For the family. In our culture, it's all about "We" instead of "I" Lawson continued.
The task of relocating a body around the world is taxing and expensive. The community has already lent a hand through prayer, support and encouraging words. But now money is needed to bring peace to this horrible situation.
Nadou says she and her father are grateful for the generosity...and will continue to rely on their faith for strength.
"Jesus Christ is definitely helping me get through this tough incident," she said.
