Orange Park teen hit by car is recovering

ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- A teenager is recovering after being hit by a car last month while trying to cross the street.

Heather Barnes, 14, was trying to cross Kingsley Avenue near Orange Park High School when she was hit on October 25. Police said, she was outside the crosswalk. No charges were filed.

Thursday, Action News spoke to her aunt who told us that Barnes is no longer in the medically-induced coma and that she is responding to touch. Barnes is breathing on her own but is still hooked up to a ventilator as a precaution.

Barnes' family also said she had a part of her skull was removed temporarilly and will require more surgery in a couple of months.
