ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Investigators are zeroing in on the car in a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a teenager from St. Augustine last November.

Haley Smith, 15, died after a car hit her while she walked along Kenton Morrison Road with friends, just north of Four Mile Road.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement analyzed paint chips found at the scene. According to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, the chips indicate the hit-and-run vehicle to be metallic purple or black.

Investigators believe the vehicle is an SUV or small pick-up truck similar to a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck or S-10 Blazer with damage to the passenger side headlight area and a missing or recently replaced side mirror.

There may also be damage to the passenger side windshield.

Call Crime Stoppers at 888-277-TIPS if you have any information. You will remain anonymous. A reward of up to $6,000 is being offered in the case. You can also call Deputy J.D. McGinnis at 904-209-1498.

This is what license plate registration is for. Run a DMV database check in Florida and Georgia for S-10's and blazers with black or metallic or purple paint jobs. Eliminate those that don't match and keep narrowing it down. Yes its lengthy process but hitting and running on a human being implies they were intoxicated or on drugs when they ran. Also go to all the you pull it yourself junkyards and run a check for any mirrors or headlights being paid for off those models or ANY similar model of any kind. Those places often have security cammeras at the gate to prevent theft etc might get match that way.

zeroing in huh ??? right !!! it could be purple or black... it may be an s-10 blazer... it may have been driven by ET & he phoned home & was picked up by the mother ship.... its been 2 plus months & the truck has been fixed & repainted, or is in another state... or it is buried deep in a garage somewhere till the heat dies down... but it hardly seems like they are closing in ...s-10 chevy's come in many colors & were made for many years, so w/out specific info, they can't rely on the publics help in narrowing down the search...
