PALM COAST, Fla. -- Police have charged a 13-year-old boy with sexual battery on a 5-year-old girl after he allegedly touched the child in a home.

The Indian Trails Middle School student was arrested by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office on Thursday on a charge of sexual battery on a victim under the age of 12.

Police say the teen is charged with inappropriately touching the girl in a Palm Coast home on January 10. The victim told detectives that she was sleeping on a couch when she was awakened about 9 p.m. by the teen who was pulling down her pants and underwear. The girl said the teen then touched her private area, but ran back to his bed when an adult approached them.

Deputies say the adult told them he found the girl in her room with her pants down around her feet.

"This is an upsetting case of abuse. We have our victim advocates working with the young girl and her parents to be sure she has access to the professional attention that she undoubtedly needs after such an experience," said Flagler County Sheriff James L. Manfre.
