JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Bi-Lo, the parent company of Winn-Dixie, is expanding by acquiring more than 20 stores in South Carolina and Georgia, according to a company press release.

The supermarket chain says it expects to close on all of its newly acquired properties by the end of 2013.

The Piggly Wiggly stores, included in the deal, will be rebranded under the Bi-Lo name.

The company will add some 1,200 store employees to its count of an estimated 60,000 associates.

Bi-Lo currently operates 686 grocery stores in the Southeast.
